Chapter Twenty-One

Jennifer stood close to Jorja as they watched flames slowly die. She felt nothing from her and that bothered her more than any amount of anger Jorja could display right now. She’d seen her angry, and she knew that anger had resulted in violence not death.

However, this stoicism made her wonder what kind of pain Jorja was planning to visit on those responsible before she killed them.

This is where you deal, she told herself. Where you really face the reality of your decision to be with this woman. You know what people say she’s capable of. You’ve seen the evidence and now you accept her truly or run away no matter the consequences.

But where would you go when she’s the only place you want to be?

The fire was finally out, but the building was gone.

“Jennifer, get in the SUV,” Jorja said quietly. “Sonnet.”

Jennifer put her head on Jorja’s shoulder and wrapped her arm around her waist. “I’m sorry, Jorja.”

“I know,” Jorja said tersely. “Now, obey me.”

“No. At your side is where I belong, not stashed away.”

“I need to talk to the guards’ families,” Jorja told her.

“I’ve got their contact information,” Casey said. “I’ll get it for you.”

“Jorja, another one of the stores burned along with the building on the property you just bought,” Sonnet told her. “Call just came in.”

Jorja nodded and Jennifer was even more worried. All she saw was a tick of the muscle in her jaw.

“I’ve got to contact my family,” Jorja said as a fireman came striding over along with a cop. The blonde, Blu, was with them.

“Ms. McMasters,” the fireman said. “We did see someone inside, but we weren’t able to get to them. I’m sorry for your loss, but an investigation will be launched to find out how the fire started.”

“Thank you,” she said with a nod.

“Did any kind of chemical or electrical processes go on here?” he asked.

“No. It was a jewelry store,” Jorja retorted.

“And someone could have broken in to steal something and torched the place,” the cop said giving her a little smirk.

Jorja looked at her, her expression unchanged. “They could have,” Jorja agreed. “We did have gold and several types of stones on hand especially diamond and sapphire. My grandfather would have locked the vault for the evening by now, though.”

“Maybe that’s why someone set the place on fire,” the cop said. “He was too dumb to save his own life.”

Sonnet made a move and Jorja held up a hand. “I imagine the police will do their job. Have a good night,” Jorja said and turned, keeping her arm around Jennifer as she headed to the car.

“Ms. McMasters,” Detective Blu called.

“Everyone in the vehicle,” Jorja ordered and this time Casey took her arm and led her away, though Sonnet remained.

“What’s she going to say I can’t hear? The woman’s a cop,” Jennifer complained.

“She’s also the enemy,” Casey replied. “So, in you go.”

Jennifer climbed in and a moment later Jorja was seated next to her.

“I doubt they’ll find bodies, but they may find something we can use dental records on,” Jorja said coldly.
